Box Hill Suburb Facts

Box Hill is a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 14 kilometres (8.7 mi) east of the city's Central Business District (CBD), located within the City of Whitehorse local government area. Box Hill recorded a population of 14,353 at the 2021 census.

Established in the 1850s, Box Hill now sits in a CBD of its own, rapidly proliferating into its own council, with Box Hill North, Box Hill South, and Box Hill Central. To this day, Box Hill is renowned as a comunnal congregation of Chinese culture and cuisine, forming one of the largest Chinese communities in Melbourne, Victoria. Also home to the tallest skyscrapers beyond the CBD vicinity, Box Hill is a leading suburb in modern infrastructure evolution — home to one of the city’s busiest train stations, located underneath Box Hill Central. Numerous bus routes link and stopover at Box Hill, meaning multiple travel options either east or to the CBD for box Hill locals.

Reaching back into this popular suburb’s history, Box Hill was first settled by the squatter Arundel Wrighte in 1838, when the land was still a lush, leafy sprawl of pastoral elements and farms.

Living in Box Hill can sometimes get hectic because of the high density. But the plethora of facilities, close CBD access, and multiple shopping centres is why the suburb is so populated. Renowned for primary and secondary education, Box Hill High School consistently ranks as a top Victorian secondary college. Box Hill provides support for newcomers, with the Box Hill library, the Box Hill community centre, and neighbourhood houses peppered around the district. The Box Hill shopping district strip offers fresh veggies and fruits to local customers, and other services and amenities for daily living. A myriad of restrauarnts abound along such shopping strips.

Residents are neither at a loss for recreational ventures, with parks, aquatic centres, outdoor gyms and morning tai chi gatherings in plaza plots. Centred around the Box Hill Central, there are big grocery stores and tasty food & dining. Coupled with the major retail stores in close driving distance at Westfield Doncaster, locals can shop to their heart’s desire. Connected to bus intercahnges and the Box Hill railway station, residents have many public transport options when departing.

Did you know that Box Hill used to host Melbourne’s first electric tramline? Though unsuccessful, this fascinating tidbit of history reveals the suburb’s importance in infrastrcutural and transport development in the 1890s.
