Flower Care Instructions
Caring for your beautiful blooms
How to care for your flowers
by Melissa's Florist & Gifts
1. Prune and Trim
For flower bouquets, cut your flower stems at a sharp 45° angle with scissors every second day or when the stems start softening. The angle allows the flowers to absorb water more effectively.
2. Water and Hydration
Change the water in your vase or top up the water in your boxed arrangement every second day with clean tap water. Fresh water nourishes the blooms, ensuring they stay lively.
3. Remove leaves
Remove any leaves or foliage in the water. This prevents bacteria growth and keeps your arrangement looking pristine.
4. Bid Adieu to Browning
Gently strip away brown and soggy leaves or petals to maintain the elegance of your bouquet.
5. Feed your Blooms
Treat your flowers to a special meal by adding flower food or a pinch of sugar to clean water. This concoction revitalises your blooms, making them stand out even more.
6. Morning Sunlight
Flowers enjoy indirect morning sunlight or a shady spot. Avoid direct sunlight and don't leave your flowers in the car by themselves. Direct sunlight burns flowers and plants.
7. Not too hot, not too cold
Flowers don't cope well in extreme temperatures or humidity. Turn the air conditioner on in your car or home in the heat. Keep your flowers in a cool room and away from the heater or harsh winds, ensuring they're comfy and cosy.
It might sound tricky at first, but you'll get the hang of it! A little goes a long way. What's most important is to remember to water your flowers and avoid heat.
Special Care Instructions
Please make sure to follow the 'How to care for your flowers' guide before starting special care instructions.
Orchids - Special Care Instructions
Orchids are tropical flowers, from Singapore. If your Moth Orchid, Singapore Orchid or Cymbidium Orchid starts wilting, dunk the flowers upside down in cold water. Let your flowers soak overnight, like a spa. Treat this as a last resort.
Roses - Special Care Instructions
Beautiful, but delicate, roses need extra care and attention. Do not drop water on your rose petals, as water burns rose heads. Roses burn easily in the heat. Keep them cool with an air-conditioned room or car. Rose stems must drink water as soon as possible, especially in hot weather. If your roses came in an arrangement, such as a box or hatbox, please top up the foam with water every two days, while if your roses came in a bouquet or vase, please cut and add water as soon as you receive your roses for prime hydration.
- Guard petals: If you see green or warped petals on your rose, don't stress, these are guard petals. We send our roses with their protective outer petals intact to shield them during delivery. Please gently peel away the three to four guard petals to reveal the delicate and beautiful rose.
- Cut your rose stems at a sharp 45° angle with scissors every second day by 3-5 centimetres. We recommend cutting the flowers under running water to ensure the roses receive continued access to proper hydration.
- Roses love lukewarm water. If your roses' heads start drooping, please cut the stems and place in boiled water.
- You can find flower food at our store. Alternatively, add a spoon of lemon juice and sugar into the water.
- Ensure you change the water in the vase every second day or top up the foam in the arrangement every second day.
- Continue to remove the falling outer petals from the rose head to enable the rose to fully open.
Lilies - Special Care Instructions
- We try to send our lilies in the bud when we can to keep them fresh. The lilies will gradually open when left in a sun-lit place within a few days.
- Cut your rose stems at a sharp 45° angle with scissors every second day by 2-3 centimetres.
- Optionally, you may pluck the pollen bits (burgundy colour) from the lilies after they open to prevent your floors and clothes from getting stained. Lilies are toxic for cats, so please don't purchase bouquets with lilies if you are a cat owner.
